CERAMIC LANTERNS
2ND-3RD GRADE
Overview: This is a two-part lesson. For the first part, students created wrap construction in which the stage of the clay is plastic (soft and moldable). The following week, students carved out patterns in which their wrap constructions were in the leatherhard stage. The leatherhard stage is when one can handle the clay without distorting the form.
Each student was given a large piece of clay slab with a large plastic bag. The plastic bag aided the students in rolling the slab around a paper-covered paint jug without tearing the slab.
The students drew and colored their patterns on newsprint paper. Afterward, the students traced their pattern on the surface of the clay cylinders, using a fettling knife to cut out the pattern.
